VueTronic LED Glossary

Anamorphic Creative

Anamorphic LED Ads are 3D-style videos designed to look like they’re coming off the screen. They grab attention instantly and often go viral online and various social media platforms. It turns a digital display from a message board into a landmark destination feature. Often used on a corner or L-shaped structure for maximum effect.

Aspect Ratio & 16:9

Aspect Ratio refers to the proportional relationship between a display’s width and height,
expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g., 16:9, 4:3, 1:1). A 16:9 ratio is most common for LED video displays as it matches HD and 4K content formats. Maintaining the correct aspect ratio prevents image distortion or letterboxing.  VueTronic recommends 16:9 where possible for content compatibility as it is the global standard for HD images and video.

Mounting

VueTronic LED displays will be mounted according to your spec drawings.  The LED frames can be custom engineered for architectural designed, curved, freestanding, hanging pole or wall-mounded structures.

Motion

The use of animated or changing content on a digital display that captures attention.  Movement naturally attracts the human eye, especially in peripheral vision, making digital signage more noticeable than static signs.

NovaStar

NovaStar provides both sending controllers and receiving cards, making it one of the most widely used end-to-end control systems in the global LED display industry.

Nits

Nits are a unit of measurement used to describe the brightness of a display.  In LED display technology, nits indicate how much light a screen emits.

Pixel

A pixel is a group of diodes that form a complete light point.

Pixel Pitch

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between LED pixels.  A smaller pixel pitch means higher resolution, as more pixels can fit into a given area, creating sharper and more detailed images.  Buying the tightest pixel pitch the budget will allow will help future-proof the investment over the lifetime of the sign – approximately a decade or 100,000+ hours to 50% brightness depending on usage and environment.

Pixel Resolution

The total number of pixels that make up an LED display.  Used for image detail and output quality.  The term is often used interchangeably with the pixel matrix.

Pixel Matrix

Pixel matrix is the total number of pixels arranged horizontally and vertically across an LED display, expressed as width × height.  The pixel matrix is the physical grid of pixel columns and rows.

Receiving Card

A core LED control component that receives data from the sending card and converts it into signals that control the LED modules.  VueTronic displays include NovaStar receiving cards.

Power Consumption

Power consumption is the amount of electricity an LED display uses, directly affecting operating costs, electrical requirements, and long-term return on investment.  VueTronic provides electrical load information and installation guidance for every project.

Redundancy

Backup power and control systems.

Refresh Rate (Hz)

The number of times per second the display updates the image (e.g., 1920Hz, 3840Hz).  Higher refresh rates reduce flicker and are critical for video, camera recording, and broadcast environments.

Sixteen-Nine (16:9)

16:9 is an aspect ratio commonly used for televisions, commercial displays, and LED videowalls.  It means the measurement of the display is 16 units wide for every 9 units of height and is a modern media standard measurement.

Sending Card

Transmits content data to the display.  VueTronic displays include NovaStar sending cards.

Taurus Software

VueTronic displays utilize any software of choice.  We default to BrightSign but also utilize a  software called Taurus which is an app-based software that gives you the ability to upload content and manage the sign with a smartphone or tablet.  No connectivity is necessary, you only need to be near the sign to upload and manage the content.

Sustainability

LED displays are a sustainable marketing tool.  With a long product life span, automatic dimming, endless messaging with zero waste, and recyclable components at end-of-life.  VueTronic displays are a great sustainable choice – better for your business, better for the planet.

Traffic Count

Traffic count is the number of cars that pass your location every day.  The higher the traffic, the more people your messages reach – which increases the value of your digital display and its advertising potential.

Touch Screen

A display that allows users to interact directly with the content by touching the screen, enabling features like wayfinding and interactive menus.  VueTronic offers touch screen products.

Transparent LED Screens

Transparent screens are designed to turn any window into a digital display while still allowing light to pass through.  The screen is made with thin LED strips spaced apart that is applied to the inside of the window.  From the outside, passers by see the bright full images, while from the inside you can still see out.

Video Wall

A fine pitch LED video wall is a high-res LED display designed with a very small pixel pitch, allowing for sharper image quality at a close viewing distance.  VueTronic’s Stage Backdrop at Cook County Saloon in Edmonton is a great example.  This is a 6’ x 20’, 2.6mm pixel pitch, stage backdrop that can toggle from the stage to the dancefloor, to drink/event promotions or sponsorship activations:

Viewing Distance

Viewing distance simply means how close someone can stand to the screen before they start seeing the individual LED dots.  The smaller the pixel pitch, the closer people can be, while the image still looks smooth and sharp.   A smaller pitch = higher resolution and closer viewing distance. Larger pitch = wider spacing for long-distance viewing.

Viewing Angle

The maximum angle at which the display can be viewed without significant loss of brightness or colour accuracy.  Measured horizontally and vertically (e.g. 140° H / 120° V).
